ENSTAR Work Along Alumni Drive

ENSTAR work will shift to Alumni Drive starting Thursday, August 1. This work will include excavation along the north side of Alumni Drive between East Campus Central Lot and the East Parking Garage. This work is not expected to impact the traffic lanes of Alumni Drive. There will be intermittent impact to adjacent pathways.

ENSTAR: Partial Closures of Spirit Drive

Spirit Drive will experience two partial closures related to the ENSTAR Gas Line project:

On Saturday, July 27 - Spirit Drive will be closed at Seawolf Drive. This is a one-day closure. South Lot, Seawolf Sports Complex, Student Union, Bookstore, and Engineering and Industry Buildings will all remain accessible via the Providence Drive and Spirit Intersection. See the graphic below for more detail.

Beginning Monday, July 29 - ENSTAR will begin trenching along the length of Spirit Drive. This work will close the west-bound lane. The east-bound lane will remain open. ENSTAR will conduct this work in sections, so pedestrian access from South Lot to the buildings will be maintained. South Lot, Seawolf Sports Complex, Student Union, Bookstore, and Engineering and Industry Buildings will all remain accessible via the Seawolf Drive and Spirit Intersection. See the graphic below for more detail. This portion of the work is expected to last one week.

ENSTAR Gas Line Replacement

Beginning Monday, July 15, ENSTAR Natural Gas will begin work to replace campus gas infrastructure on central and east campus. Activity will include a combination of trenching and boring. The project is expected to be complete my mid-August.

During the week of July 15th crews will begin staging materials and begin drilling activities to install the lines in the Seawolf Drive and Spirit Drive areas. Please be aware of equipment and crews working in these areas.

Lake Otis and 36th/Providence Intersection Weekend Closure

The intersection at Lake Otis and 36th/Providence will be closed between 8:00 pm on Friday, August 17 and 5:00 am Monday, August 20. This closure is part of AWWU's water line project. The West Lot's entrance at Providence Drive will be closed during this time. West-bound traffic on Providence Drive will need to detour via Piper Street and Seawolf Drive.

ENSTAR Work at Elmore Rd and Providence Dr

Beginning the week of July 9th ENSTAR Natural Gas will begin work to the immediate north of the Elmore Road and Providence Drive intersection.

Drivers should be aware of signage indicating lane restrictions. Pedestrian access through the area will be maintained. ENSTAR expects their work to last approximately 2 weeks. 

AWWU: Lake Otis Drive Impacted by Water Line Replacement

On July 5 Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility (AWWU) and their contractor, Southcentral Construction, will begin a project to replace the 12-inch cast iron water main along the west side of Lake Otis from 36th Avenue to 42nd Avenue. This area will be significantly impacted by trenching. Two-way traffic will be maintained, but it will be constricted into the remaining lanes. AWWU says to expect periodic weekend closures in the area. Pedestrians should be aware of detours in the area.

This project is expected to run through September, and potentially into October.

ENSTAR Work Near the East Parking Lot

Beginning early February and continuing for several weeks, ENSTAR will be replacing gas pipes near the East Parking Lot (AKA Arts Lot). ENSTAR will be staging equipment in the corner of the parking lot. The bulk of their activity will be along the utility easement that runs across the undeveloped portion of UAA's property. ENSTAR activity will include tree clearing, boring, and trenching in various segments. Please use caution if you frequent the trails in this area.

ENSTAR Activites Along Providence Drive, Pathway Impacts

Starting Monday, October 9 and continuing through Saturday, October 14 ENSTAR Natural Gas will be conducting work on the north-side of Providence Drive. This work will impact the multi-use pathway. See the maps below for areas of impact and detour routes.

Please be aware of construction personnel and equipment operating in and around these areas.

City and Utility Project Updates, Traffic Impacts for First Week of Classes

There are currently several on-going projects from the city and local utilities that will impact traffic around campus for the first week of the semester. The work is weather dependent, so specific dates cannot be provided.

ML&P work in Providence Drive: the right-hand westbound lane from Spirit Dr. to Seawolf Dr. will continue to be closed into the week of the 28th. The right-hand eastbound lane from Spirit Dr. to UAA Dr. will be closed until the middle of the week of the 28th.

Municipality of Anchorage sidewalk addition on UAA Drive: MOA does not expect to complete their concrete work before Monday. Lane restrictions around this project will cause significant traffic impacts for southbound traffic and those accessing Alumni Drive from UAA Drive.

ML&P work at 36th and Old Seward: this intersection will experience a full closure this weekend. The intersection will reopen early Monday. Intermittent lane closures will persist during weekdays.

ML&P Work Update: Single-lane, East-bound closure

Municipal Light and Power expects the west-bound closure of Providence Drive between Seawolf Drive and Spirit Drive to conclude prior to Saturday, August 26. ML&P could not provide an exact date, as much of the remaining work is weather dependent.

As soon as the west-bound lanes are open, ML&P will be conducting a single-lane closure of east-bound Providence Drive between Spirit Drive and UAA Drive. See the map below. This is not a complete closure of east-bound traffic. This single-lane closure is expected to last 7 days.

UPDATED ML&P Work Update: Closure Shifting West, Impacts to Seawolf Dr. Intersection

On Wednesday, August 16, Municipal Light and Power's closure of west-bound lanes of Providence Drive will shift. The closure will be between Seawolf Drive and Spirit Drive. East-bound lanes will be accessible.

On Saturday, August 19, ML&P's work will extend into the Seawolf Drive intersection. This will temporarily block access to campus via Seawolf Drive. Access will be maintained via Spirit Drive. This closure is expected to last several days.

ENSTAR Repairs by Templewood

On Wednesday, August 16th ENSTAR will begin repairs to the gas distribution line that runs in front of the Templewood housing units. This work is expected to take 1 week. Please be aware of equipment and crews working in this area.

ML&P Work Update: Impacts at Intersection of Providence Dr. and Spirit Dr.

On Thursday, August 10th, Municipal Light and Power's work will extend into the intersection at Spirit Drive. This will temporarily block access to campus via Spirit Drive. Access will be maintained via Seawolf Drive. This closure is expected to last several days.

East-bound thru-traffic will be able to use the intersection during this time

ML&P Power Transfer

On Tuesday, July 18th, Municipal Light and Power will be transferring the electrical service for the following buildings:

• WFSC, SU, Bookstore/GSS, ANSEP, EIB, ECB, NSB, Central Garage, and SSB.

These buildings will be temporarily serviced by electrical equipment on West Campus while new gear is installed on Providence Drive near SSB. ML&P is confident the work will be conducted without a power outage; however, the risk of short outages exists any time this equipment is handled. It will take most of the day to complete the transfer.

Later this week - tentatively Thursday - this work will be conducted again, but in reverse order, to transfer the load to the new equipment.

ML&P Work Update - Road Closure Shifting West

Beginning the weekend of July 15 UAA Drive will be closed between Alumni Drive and Providence Drive. In addition, the west-bound lanes of Providence Drive will be closed between Spirit Drive and Alumni Drive. See the map below. The intersection and west-bound lanes between UAA Drive and Alumni Drive will reopen the morning of July 17. 

From July 17 to August 7 the west-bound lanes of Providence Drive between Spirit Drive and UAA Drive will be closed.

East-bound lanes will remain open. UAA's internal detour route is Alumni Drive and Mallard Lane.

UPDATE: Partial Closure of Seawolf Drive

Starting Monday, July 10 Seawolf Drive will experience a partial closure. This is to conduct repairs on a failed fire hydrant next to the Rasmuson Hall. Traffic will detour through the Sports Center West Lot. Due to the detour traffic parking will not be available in the Sports Center West Lot.

This project was previously announced for June 23. Circumstances forced a delay in the schedule.

ML&P Work - Significant Impacts to UAA Drive and Providence Drive

Beginning on Saturday, June 24 Municipal Light and Power will begin work on electrical distribution infrastructure along UAA Drive and Providence Drive. This work will cause significant road closures.

During the weekend of June 24 and 25 UAA Drive will be closed between Alumni Drive and Providence Drive. In addition, the west-bound lanes of Providence Drive will be closed between Alumni Drive and UAA Drive. See the map below. East-bound lanes will remain open. UAA's internal detour route is Alumni Drive and Mallard Lane.

The UAA Drive closure will end by Monday morning. The west-bound closure of Providence Drive will continue for several weeks. ML&P has not communicated an end date at this time.

ECB Power Outage Early Morning of October 7

The Engineering & Computation Building will experience a short power outage from 6:00 am to 8:00 am on Friday, October 7th. This outage is to test power systems in the building. We do not anticipate disruption after 8:00 am.

ML&P Emergency Cable Replacement along Providence Drive

Beginning as early as Friday, September 16th, Municipal Light & Power will be conducting work along the north side of Providence Drive between UAA Drive and Elmore Road. This is emergency work to replace main feeder cables that supply portions of the UAA, PAMC, and APU campuses.

Please be aware of traffic restrictions in this area over the next several weeks.

Water Outage for ECB, August 26th

On Friday, August 26th from approximately 8:00 am to 11:00 am the water to the Engineering & Computational Building (formerly the Engineering Building) will be offline as crews address an issue with the water meter. Restroom facilities in the Natural Sciences Building will be available for building occupants.
